Ashfords LLP

stephenhomerStephen is Head of Construction law at Ashfords LLP. He is an experienced construction lawyer well versed in promoting excellence in construction through the use of collaborative forms of construction contract as well as experienced in resolving disputes when they do occur. He is Chair of the Devon and Exeter Club.

"Construction has a lot of risk attached to it, there are a lot of unknowns out there. Problems can arise from an existing structure or quite literally out of the ground which cause delays and increase costs. A large part of the job is about realising where the risks are and mitigating against them."

"It can be quite challenging to be involved in a construction project if you're not familiar with the industry. One of the things we do is help our clients throughout the process, making the most of our industry contacts and experience, and helping them to minimise risk such as cost and time overruns."

Stephen and the team have recently advised a European contractor on the issues arising out of the construction of a power station in Bulgaria, the country's largest investment project at the time. The issues centred on a dispute with a German contractor that was subject to English law. They have also recently recovered a multi-million pound sum, without court proceedings, for a client whose designers had engineered a defective design which halted construction halfway through.
