Making membership matter: How we’re driving a community approach at CESW

Sep 17, 2025

At CESW we want our membership to deliver more — more value, more connection, more profile for our community. Our Members Director Matt Bromley is on a mission to do just that. We caught up with him to hear more about what he’s doing to achieve it

Matt’s starting point has been to understand how members currently perceive CESW and where improvements can be made.

“We’re not looking to reinvent the wheel because nothing’s broken,” he explains. “But every journey has bends and bumps in it. The aim is steady, continuous improvement. Working in conjunction with the board, I want to know what members expect, what sectors they’re working in, and what CESW can do to help raise their profile.”

This means finding out what matters most to members and listening to what they want. Equally, it’s about making sure they are aware of the opportunities already available to them with their CESW membership. From specialist focus groups to networking events, CESW offers members the chance to learn, share and connect with other constructing professionals, so it’s important to make sure everyone knows how to take advantage. That’s why Matt believes it’s vital we listen to and communicate with our members regularly.

“If we hear that members aren’t seeing value, I need to understand why,” he says. “It could be as simple as making sure they know a focus group exists that could transform their professional network.”

Shaping membership benefits that matter

Working closely with the board, Matt is also looking at how CESW collects and uses data to better understand its community, and whether membership packages should evolve to suit different needs. Part of that process is making the membership journey easier for people; ensuring they get access to everything CESW offers in a much more responsive and personalised way.

“You can see from the uptake of our events that there’s a real passion for CESW in the market,” Matt says. “Now it’s about refining the experience so that members feel the benefits of being part of the CESW community.”

A background in high standards

Matt is a Chartered Surveyor and Partner at Ward Williams, a consultancy firm with clients including the National Trust and Sainsbury’s.

Ward Williams has a rigorous focus on maintaining ethical standards and was the first chartered surveyor in the world to achieve B Corp status. They won the last ever Queen’s Award for Sustainable Development, and they’re looking to earn the next King’s Award as well.

The business runs a custodianship model – a philosophy that aims to leave organisations in a better place for the next generation.

This perspective shapes Matt’s approach at CESW. He brings the same commitment to nurturing relationships and streamlining processes with his clients at Ward Williams to his role as Members Director at CESW – putting people, places and planet first.

Building a stronger community

For Matt, being Members Director is about more than administration. It’s about championing the people who make CESW what it is. By listening carefully, raising profiles, and fine-tuning membership benefits, he wants every member to feel part of a thriving community with a real voice in the industry.

“CESW is here to support and amplify the construction community in the South West,” Matt says. “Putting people first means our membership will offer real value – and that’s what I’m working towards.”
